2 A shift from people living in the countryside into towns and cities A few Statistics:  Since 1950, the world’s urban population has quadrupled  Beginning in 2007, more people will live in urban areas than rural areas.

4 Economics: Located close to trade Environment: climate, type of land

5 Agriculture harvest produced extra amounts of food- not as many people were needed on the farm Technology advances led to the industrial revolution so there were more jobs in the city

7 What are the advantages living in each area? Urban AreasSuburbs Shorter commute Less need for car Destroys less environment (in terms of space) Cleaner More space so less crowded Less crime Better Schools

8 The spread of low-density urban or suburban development outward from an urban center Each person in the suburban region takes up an average of 11 times as much space as do residents of cities
