8. 1A. The Extended Essay ”The extended essay is an academic research exercise presented as a formal piece of scholarship of no more than 4,000 words.... It is intended to promote research skills, intellectual discovery and creativity and presents the students with an opportunity to engage in personal research into a topic of their own choice. The final presented work…gives the student an opportunity to show knowledge, understanding and enthusiasm about a topic of his or her own choice.” (Hickey 2011) (Secondary sources should be consulted!)

The formal elements are: title page, table of contents, page numbers, illustrative material, quotations, documentation (including references, citations and bibliography) and appendices (if used). (Extended Essay Guide 2013) Thus, if all parts of the essay are included, and you have documented sources, you should have 4 marks!
