Save the document as BellWork_Name in the US Government folder on your desktop. You will turn this in for a grade at the end of the block.  Place today’s date at the top of the page, and answer the following question using complete sentences and a minimum of one (3+ sentence) paragraph.  What is Government?? 1.Be present at your computer during ALL of class. 2.Have eyes on me and BBC. 3.Ears listening and ready to follow instructions. 4.Keep chat on topic. 5.Use whiteboard tools and programs as directed.

What are we going to learn today??  Content- –Students will be able to define what government is identify its purposes, and describe the basic ideas of American democracy. –Students will be able to define power and authority and explain the relationship between power and government.

What is Government?  Can government control everything you do?  Is government reserved for professional politicians?  Does government matter to your everyday life?  Who said the government could make laws you have to obey or levy taxes you have to pay?

Order: A government maintains order among the members of society. 3. Conflict resolution: A government helps resolve disputes. 4. Economic stability: A government exercises some degree of control over the economy. 5. Public services: A government provides items the public needs.

The Preamble to the US Constitution  We, the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.  Can you find all five purposes for government in the preamble?

Evolution Theory- Government evolved from family ties 3. Divine Right Theory- Government was created by God and God chose leaders 4. Social Contract Theory- Government was created when members of a society agreed to create it.

Power and Authority  Power- the ability to make someone do what you want them to.  Authority- power that is legitimately exercised Power is a fundamental part of life. Because government has power over people, understanding power is the key to understanding government.

It has a group of people (the population). 2. It has a defined territory (land enclosed by borders). 3. It has a government (you know what that is). 4. It has sovereignty (supreme authority within its territory).

Theories of Power Elitist  in any society, only a small group of people—the elites— hold power. –Karl Marx- the elites control the economy –C. Wright Mills- the elites control, the economy, the government and the military. –Max Weber- elite are bureaucrats. Pluralist  a large number, or a plurality, of people hold power. –John Locke- governments get the right to govern from the people they rule
