FORCES ECQ: How do forces affect motion?
2
WHAT IS A FORCE?? A force is a PUSH or a PULL.A force is a PUSH or a PULL. All forces have SIZE and DIRECTION.All forces have SIZE and DIRECTION. Forces are measured in NEWTONS (N)Forces are measured in NEWTONS (N)
3
Which are FORCES? A) Pushing your little sister on a swing. B) Kicking a soccer ball. C) Dragging the trash can to the curb. D) Combing your hair. E) All of these
4
NET FORCE Net force is the COMBINATION of all forces acting on an object.
5
CALCULATING NET FORCE Draw a picture of what is happening in the problem. Place arrows on the picture showing the DIRECTIONS and SIZES of the forces. If the arrows are in the SAME direction, ADD the forces. If the arrows are in DIFFERENT directions, SUBTRACT the forces.
6
BALANCED FORCES If the NET FORCE is ZERO. The forces are BALANCED. This means that NO MOTION occurs. The forces are equal and in opposite directions.

UNBALANCED FORCES If the NET FORCE is NOT equal to zero, the forces are UNBALANCED.If the NET FORCE is NOT equal to zero, the forces are UNBALANCED. Motion will occur.Motion will occur. The object will move in the direction of the greatest force. The object will move in the direction of the greatest force.

FIND THE NET FORCE A man is pulling on a rope with a force of 20 N to the LEFT. A woman is pulling on the other end of the rope to the right with a force of 15 N. What is the NET FORCE? a) 35N left b) 0 N c) 5N Right d) 5 N Left
11
A girl is pulling a wagon with a force of 15 N to the right. Her brother is pushing to the right with a force of 15 N. What is the NET FORCE?
12
2 Kindergartners are on one side of a rope pulling with a force of 20 N to the left. 2 other kindergartners are pulling to the right with a force of 20 N. What is the NET FORCE? a) 40 N left b) 40 N right c) 400 N d) O N
