2 Stages of Change  Pre – contemplation: Not acknowledging the need to change  Contemplation: Acknowledging the need to change  Preparation: Getting ready to change  Action: Attempting/Making the change  Maintenance: Keeping it going  Relapse: Return to old behaviour/habit 2 Critical motivation & adherence

3 Beliefs & Priorities: understanding your client  Problem recognition: What is the issue?  Perceived impact on life/wellbeing: What effect is it having?  Beliefs about the capacity to change: What can be done?  Intention to change: What are you thinking of doing/changing? 3

4 Stage Related Counselling Goals  Evoke reasons to change  Demonstrate benefits of change exceed costs  Determine easiest method for client to become active 4

5 Stage related counselling goals (cont)  Positively reinforce all attempts to change  Prevent boredom and complacency  Highlight reasons for and solutions to situations that may lead the client to relapse 5

6 Stage Related Behavioural Strategies  Provide information about the benefits of (i) improved health & fitness, (ii) cosmetic and social consequences  Prepare cost/benefit table for adopting activity  Barriers to adopting physical activity 6

7 Stage Related Behavioural Strategies (cont)  Provide extensive positive feedback & reinforcement  Help client adopt new physical activity challenges  Highlight potential high risk situations 7

8 Individualised Adherence Strategies  When recommending behavioural strategies to help clients adhere to their program, incorporate the client's lifestyle habits such as: exercise history present fitness level likes and dislikes 8

9 Goal Setting  Match client's wants (as reported in the pre-assessment lifestyle questionnaire)...with the client's needs (as measured by the client's fitness appraisal/assessment)  This will determine the client's Health & Fitness goals which can include: o physical, psychological, social and behavioural aspects 9

10 Goals need to be: S.M.A.R.T.E.R. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, RewardingMotivational tool Time-frame Evaluate Review 10

11 What This Means: Behavioural contracts Process & Components of a contract: Two parties consideration Terms and conditions Agreement signed off 11

12 Next Steps:  Don’t become a REP counter  Yours and your clients’ long term success depends on YOUR ability to: Provide a professional, ethical, and empathetic atmosphere Motivate, adapt, and reward. 12
