IMPERIALISM A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Many countries became involved in Imperialism to become a powerful country.

IMPERIALISM Cuba tried to break free from being owned & controlled by Spain for over 20 years. Each time the Cubans tried to fight Spain they were defeated and Spain kept control of Cuba. American businesses in Cuba grew & as more Americans worked in Cuba, they got caught up in the fight between Cubans and Spanish as Cuba continued to fight to become free of Spanish rule.

IMPERIALISM A major factor in the shift in American foreign policy toward imperialism in the late 19 th century was the need for overseas markets for increased industrial and agricultural production. By the 1890’s, the United States was bursting with a new sense of power generated by an increase in population, wealth, & industrial production.

“THE SPLENDID LITTLE WAR” In an attempt to persuade Spain to leave Cuba or to encourage the United States to help Cuba to gain its independence, Cuban insurrectos adopted a scorched-earth policy of burning cane fields & sugar mills.

TREATY OF PARIS 1898 Spain grants Cuba its Independence U.S. gets the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam Platt Amendment allowed the U.S. to intervene in Cuba’s affairs, which U.S. did on multiple occasions. Guantanamo Bay Cuba became a Protectorate of U.S.
