Creative terminology

Formal elements These are the elements that are used within a picture either in painting or photography line tone shape space Colour texture

Context When a picture is in ‘context’ it means within an environment or setting. For example a figure in a room, or a still life on a table. Objects without a background are out of context.

Viewpoint The angle from which the picture has been drawn painted or photographed. ‘Birds eye’ looking down from above ‘Worms eye’ looking up from the ground ‘Eye level’ looking straight ahead at your viewpoint.

Collage Technique (and resulting work of art) that uses a range of materials such as pieces of paper, photographs, fabric and other items which are arranged and stuck down to a supporting surface.

Installation art Mixed-media constructions or assemblages usually designed for a specific place and for a temporary period of time.

Mono-printing A form of printmaking where the image can only be made once, unlike most printmaking which allows for multiple originals.

Etching Printmaking technique that uses chemical action to produce incised lines in a metal printing plate which then hold the applied ink and form the image.

Time-based media Refers to art that is dependent on technology and has a durational dimension. For example a short film, or time lapse photography (a sequence of images that portray the passing of time).

Assemblage Artwork made by assembling different objects often scavenged by the artist, sometimes bought specifically for the piece.

Sculpture Three-dimensional art made by one of four basic processes: carving, modelling, casting, constructing.

Perspective A system for representing objects in three-dimensional space (i.e. for representing the visible world) on the two- dimensional surface of a picture.

Mixed media A term used to describe works composed of a combination of different media or materials.

Maquette A model for a larger piece of sculpture.
