Groups of Vascular Plants  Vascular plants: divided into 3 smaller groups  Angiosperms- Flowering plants  Gymnosperms- cone bearing plants  Pteridophyte-ferns ****Possible extra credit****  Vascular plants: divided into 3 smaller groups  Angiosperms- Flowering plants  Gymnosperms- cone bearing plants  Pteridophyte-ferns ****Possible extra credit****

Vascular Plants  ~270,000 kinds of vascular plants in the world  Vascular- means having tubes. Tubes carry water and food to all parts of the plant. (The tubes can be compared to plumbing in a house.)  Can be taller than nonvascular plants because of these tubes.  ~270,000 kinds of vascular plants in the world  Vascular- means having tubes. 4 Vascular Plants  Made of three systems- roots, stems, and leaves  Roots- anchor the plant in the ground  Absorb water and nutrients from the soil  Stems- connect the roots and the leaves  Carry water and food. Keeps plant standing straight up  Made of three systems- roots, stems, and leaves  Roots- anchor the plant in the ground  Absorb water and nutrients from the soil  Stems- connect the roots and the leaves  Carry water and food. 5 Parts of Vascular Plants  Leaves- like a factory, make food and give off oxygen.  Why do we need Oxygen?  Chloroplasts- contain chlorophyll. (what makes plants green) It is a green substance that absorbs sunlight.  Sugar or glucose in plants is food for the plant.  Leaves- like a factory, make food and give off oxygen.  Why do we need Oxygen?  Chloroplasts- contain chlorophyll. 6 Photosynthesis- How plants make food?

Nonvascular Plants  Nonvascular Plants- nonvascular means without tubes. Do not have tubes to carry water and food to parts of the plant.  Absorb water directly, like sponge  These plants are small and usually not very tall  Plants in this group are called bryophytes  Nonvascular Plants- nonvascular means without tubes. 8 Bryophytes  Grow in damp shady places  Grow close to the ground- absorb water nutrients from surrounding  Do not have real roots  Have rootlike parts- anchor them to ground  Leaflike parts- make food  Reproduce by spores  3 groups- mosses, liverworts, and hornworts  Grow in damp shady places  Grow close to the ground- absorb water nutrients from surrounding  Do not have real roots  Have rootlike parts- anchor them to ground  Leaflike parts- make food  Reproduce by spores  3 groups- mosses, liverworts, and hornworts

 Liverworts and hornworts grow in damp forests  Mosses- grow where it is moist, everywhere we see them  Liverworts and hornworts grow in damp forests  Mosses- grow where it is moist, everywhere we see them

Liverworts

Hornworts

Fungi  Fungi- organisms that absorb food and can’t move about  Used to be classified in plant kingdom  Stiff cell walls let them grow upright  Cells lack chloroplasts- so cannot make their own food.  3 groups- mold, mushrooms, and sac fungi  Fungi- organisms that absorb food and can’t move about  Used to be classified in plant kingdom  Stiff cell walls let them grow upright  Cells lack chloroplasts- so cannot make their own food.  3 groups- mold, mushrooms, and sac fungi

NEVER TOUCH OR EAT FUNGI IN THE WOODS

Study for quiz on next week  Study notes  Question format:  Fill in the blank  True or false  Study notes  Question format:  Fill in the blank  True or false

Pictures of Fungi
