The Pen Tool Does not just “write” like Pencil or Paintbrush Tools A more precise way to select ◦ Select to copy ◦ OR select to fill with paint bucket on a new layer Uses Anchor Points to create Paths

Important Pen Tool Key Commands Ctrl + Enter to convert Path to a selection Ctrl + D to deselect marching ants Ctrl + Z to undo a point (NOT DELETE) Alt to switch from pen to Convert Anchor Point Tool

The Paths Palette Keeps track of pen paths Location: Tab next to Layers Palette Create new Path Layers (same looking button as Layers Palette) Must Rename Paths to “save” them

Closed Path with the Pen Tool 1. New Path Layer 2. Rename Path Layer 3. Pen Tool to Select 4. Marching Ants (ctrl + enter) Click when you reach the endpoint to make a closed path It will show the pen with a circle below when you are back at your beginning point

Picking your picture… Needs to be a celebrity from Warhol’s time (50s or 60s) Needs to show good contrast and shading that is obvious to you! Must be black and white! Also: headshot, mostly face… can show neck and shoulders Save at least 5 examples on your computer (I will have to veto some)

Extra Pen Tool Practice Find a complex image on a complicated background Don’t forget to check that “Paths” is selected in the Pen Tool Options Bar Practice making a path around the image with the pen tool Turn the Pen Path into a selection and copy and paste your selected image into a new background
