Recycling: an issue for everyone?

The UK produces more household waste per head of the population than many of its European neighbours. An island the size of Texas is forming in the Central Pacific Ocean……an island made entirely of discarded plastic debris.

Did you know… 1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours. 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials. Up to 60% of the rubbish that ends up in the dustbin could be recycled.

Plastic bags are not bio-degradable…

500 years Petrochemicals: these chemicals are mainly toxic, which cause soils to slowly suffocate when they are left to breakdown. Worldwide a trillion single-use plastic bags are used each year. That’s nearly 2 million each minute. The average EU citizen currently uses 200 a year.

Uganda Bags are cut into strips and woven into hats, bags, doormats and even waistcoats. It is believed the recycling industry in Kampala employs 6 000 people. Scavengers at the dump in the capital, earn around 50 Ugandan pence a day collecting plastic bags. In April 2015 plastic bags were banned.
