Think – Pair – Share Do biotic and abiotic factors affect each other?

© 2004 Plano ISD, Plano, TX the study of the relationships between biotic and abiotic factors in environments… their “home” Eco - = home ecoclimate ecosystem -logy= study of zoology climatology Ecology Eco logy

© 2004 Plano ISD, Plano, TX Ecosystem is a system where abiotic and biotic factors interact with each other in a particular area. Biotic Factors the living parts of an ecosystem Abiotic Factors the nonliving parts of an ecosystem

Do biotic and abiotic factors affect each other? If there is no water…can anything grow or survive? If it is extremely cold one winter, will that affect whether an animal makes it?

© 2004 Plano ISD, Plano, TX Do biotic and abiotic factors affect each other? If there is no water…can anything grow or survive? No! If it is extremely cold one winter, will that affect whether an animal makes it? Yes! So, abiotic and biotic DO affect each other. Even though water and temperature aren’t living things, they DO affect living things!

Engage: Organization Activity Read the following passage then work with your partner. A student lives in an apartment with his family in the Gateways Apartment Complex. The apartment complex is located in the Regency neighborhood of the city Starville. The city of Starville is located in Denton county in the state of Texas. Task: Identify the six locations used to describe where the student lives. Put them in order from the most precise location to the broadest.

© 2004 Plano ISD, Plano, TX Levels of Organization one individual living thing all organisms of the same kind living in one area all interacting populations in an ecosystem all living and nonliving things interacting within a certain area

© 2004 Plano ISD, Plano, TX Engage Activity – Card Sort With your partner, examine all the cards carefully. Determine whether they represent an organism, a population, a community, or an ecosystem.
