5 min AGENDA Objective(s): SWBAT compare and contrast abiotic and biotic factors of an environment. SWBAT distinguish between the levels of organization within an ecosystem. DATE HERE Learner Profile – Caring Enter the classroom silently and collect the 5 pieces pf material near the door. 1.Write down homework in your agenda. 2.Turn in homework due today 3.DO NOW: Four Square Do Now 4.Wait silently for instructions

STATEMENT OF INQUIRY: Interactions among environments allows organisms to create their own identity and form relationships with various communities in order to survive. IB TRAIT: CARING Unit Question/IB Trait

What living/non-living things do you see in this picture? All of these factors create ecosystems !

Ecosystems http://www.brainpop.com/scie nce/ecologyandbehavior/eco systems/http://www.brainpop.com/scie nce/ecologyandbehavior/eco systems/

Ecosystems Ecosystems are composed of the interactions that occur between the living and non-living components within them.

Biotic Factors The biotic factors are the living and once-living components of an ecosystem. This also includes the role the living organisms play within the ecosystem. (i.e. producers, consumers, predators, prey) biotic What does biotic factor mean?

Stop and Jot What are some biotic factors in an ecosystem?

Abiotic Factors The abiotic factors are the non-living components of an ecosystem. These factors directly affect living organisms and their ability to survive and reproduce. abiotic What does abiotic factor mean?

Stop and Jot What are some abiotic factors in an ecosystem?

Levels of Organization To help understand the interactions of biotic and abiotic factors, ecosystems are organized into levels. This allows scientists to study individual organisms, interactions among organisms of the same species, and interactions among organisms of different species, as well as the effects of abiotic factors on interacting species.

Organism individual living thing made up of cells uses energy reproduces grows and develops responds to its environment. not Why would sunlight not be considered an organism?

Population A population is a group of organisms, all of the same species, which interbreed and live in the same place at the same time. Would this fox and this frog be considered a population? Why or why not?

Community A community consists of all the populations of different species that live in the same place at the same time.

Ecosystem An ecosystem consists of all the populations of organisms that interact with each other in a given area and with the abiotic components of that area.

Levels of Organization In order from the least complex to the most complex, the level of organization is… OrganismPopulationCommunity Ecosystem

Quick Quiz 1.An ecosystem is made up of: a.Biotic things only b.Physical environment only c.Biotic things and abiotic things. d.Biotic things and decaying matter 2.Two abiotic factors that affect an ecosystem are: a.Temperature and animals. b.Plants and animals c.Water and bacteria d.Soil and water 3.All leopard frogs in a pond would be considered a: a.Organism b.Population c.Community d.Ecosystem

Independent Practice Read the article about ecosystems and answer the six comprehension questions at the end – you may write your answers in the six boxes on the guided notes. 20 min

Complete the exit ticket silently. Turn in as you leave. Exit Ticket

STOP Cards SSummarize: Summarize the day’s lesson and what we learned. TTrait: What IB trait relates to the lesson? OObjective: Re-state in your own words and say whether or not we met that objective for the day. PPurpose: What was the purpose of this lesson?
