+ Organization Homework Planner Each student will be given a homework planner where all important information will be recorded for the following week. Homework Folder / Parent Communication Folder Each student will be given a blue folder for transporting important information to and from school. Assessment Portfolios About twice per month, students will bring home a three ringed binder called a portfolio to share with you. In the portfolio, students will keep all graded assignments. The purpose of the portfolio is for students and parents to keep up to date with progress being made in school. Portfolios should always be signed and returned the following school day.

+ Homework Homework will be assigned each Friday. Each assignment will be due on a specified date. Read, read, read! Students will be keeping track of their AR goals and progress on pacing guides each week. Please encourage them to keep reading to reach their goals! Students should be reading at least 100 minutes per week, however, reading and math homework combined should not exceed 40 minutes per night. Spelling Tests Spelling pretests will be given on Fridays. Final tests will occur the following Thursday, so students may also need to study their spelling words in addition to their math and reading homework.

11 HOMEWORK ROLES Student’s Role: Copy nightly homework into homework planner, which is to be kept in his/her backpack at all times. Turn homework in on time. Parent’s Role: Review completed homework and/or give support to your child with homework. Check planner/binder over the weekend and sign it. If you would like for teacher to review a problem with your child write a note onto the homework. Teacher’s Role: Check that planners are filled in correctly. Review daily for completeness.

+ Accelerated Reader Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program that allows students to choose books at their reading level. After books are completed, students then take comprehension tests on the computer. Points are awarded based on the number of questions they have answered correctly and how many points the book itself is worth. Each trimester, students will be assigned a point goal based on their reading level. Students will keep records of their progress on their AR pacing guides, so you can also be aware of how many points they are working toward and/or need to achieve by the end of the trimester. + Potential Field Trips Roseville Utility Center Coloma Sutter’s Fort and California Indian Museum Walk Through California In past years, field trips cost around $40.00 per student. PTC will not be fully funding field trips this year! If you plan to chaperone a trip this year, please make sure you have a School Volunteer Information Form on file in the office at your earliest convenience.

14 POINTS OF INTEREST Student-Led Conferences Fall Conferences are with parent(s) and child - sign up will be done on-line again this year. School Communications Flyers and other school communications will go home in your child’s blue Parent Communication folder daily. A class update will be emailed every Friday. AM Snack Recess All snacks should be nutritious, for example: fruit, nuts, veggies…and children may bring water bottles to class (label it with your child’s name). Birthdays If you plan to provide individual treats (no utensils required to serve or consume) for your child’s birthday, please bring them to the classroom first thing in the morning. We will distribute them at the end of the day.

15 Volunteers I encourage any parent who would like to help out room 18 to please do so! We are in need of: Workroom volunteers- These volunteers copy and assemble packets, laminate, etc. in the work room (must attend training). PTC Liaison – Attend PTC meetings, plan and help students create auction item. Room Parent – Help coordinate room parties (Thanksgiving Preserve Clean-up, Winter Party, Valentine’s Day Party, End of the Year Field Trip) Art Docent: One or two parents who come in prepared to teach an art lesson once a month.

+ PTC Participation in the Blue Oaks Parent Teacher Club is a great way to make a positive difference in your child’s education. Please learn how you can become involved.
