3 ETHOS  When writing, convincing your audience that you (the writer) are worth listening to; you have credibility.  Make readers believe that you are an expert on the subject matter. How?  Demonstrate a thorough knowledge on the subject.  Speaking with a personal relationship to the subject.  Demonstrating confidence, sincerity and honesty when writing  By appealing to the ethics/character of your audience

4 Pathos  Persuading your audience by appealing to their emotions  Using IDEAS, appeal to the readers’ emotions such as empathy or fear How?  Provide the audience with a scenario that incites strong feeling

5 Logos  The logical way of looking at a topic  Appeal to the person by using facts/figures, numbers, citations, and claims. How?  Strong, clear claims  Clear reasons for claims  Strong evidence (facts, statistics, personal experience, expert authority, interviews, observations, anecdotes)  Acknowledgement of the opposition
