2 DIFFERENT KINDS OF HOOK Ask a question, but don’t answer it. –“Have you ever seen kids falling asleep in class?” Give a shocking fact or statistic –“After Minneapolis High School changed to a later start time, 92% of parents said their kids were easier to live with.” Quote an expert or personal testimony –“’Kids are so short on sleep, it’s affecting every part of their life: social, emotional, and academic,’ said Dr. Michelle Hayes.” Tell a personal story of your own (keep it very short) –“I was always a good student growing up, but arriving at 7:15am in high school was a constant battle. One time, my friend, who drove us to school, woke me up at 6:55, leaving me only twenty minutes to get ready and drive to school!”

3 PROPOSED PLAN Preview the three star main ideas (two arguments and concession/rebuttal). Ex. A later school start time will have great health benefits and a positive impact on student learning, even if the cost is a barrier.
