THE CLASSIFICATION OF LIVING THINGS
2
Classification Classifying living organisms is called – taxonomy
Founded by Carolus Linnaeus (1700 s) Species were grouped based on physical characteristics
3
Naming Organisms Each organism is given a two - word name – Binomial Nomenclature The first word – genus; the second word – species Human groups: they all belong to the same genus Homo sapiens, Homo erectus, Homo habilis, Homo neanderthal
4
The Classification of Living Things
Homo erectus Homo habilis Homo neanderthal H
5
The Classification of Living Things
Dog like groups: the same genus, different species Canis familiaris - dog Canis lupus – coyote Canis latrans - wolf
6
The Classification of Living Things
Hierarchy of Groups Each kingdom is divided many times into smaller and smaller groups (taxa, taxon – singular) Species is the most specific taxon – to be included in the same species organisms must be able to interbreed and produce fertile off springs
8
The Classification of Living Things
7 levels of similarities (7 Taxa): from the least specific to the most similar Kingdom (the least similar taxon) Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species (the most specific, similar taxon)
9
The Classification of Living Things
Wolf Panther Share the same taxa: kingdom, phylum, class, and order Belong to the different taxa: family, genus and species
