McHenry County: A Decade of Sustainability
2
Background In 2004, McHenry County recognized a need to evaluate and improve the following inefficient facilities and operations: Outdated light fixtures Aged and inefficient mechanical equipment and control systems No recycling program Use of environment-friendly cleaning chemicals Lack of assessment tools to monitor energy use
3
Initial Steps Energy Star program to benchmark energy use at each building Life cycle cost analysis to identify specific needs for capital investment Identified utility rebates provided by the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) Adopted current technologies and design standards
4
Implementation Implemented advanced computer technology to provide web accessible graphical interface for each building Building Analytics to manage and monitor utility costs Can now efficiency identify problematic building systems, oversee performance, and quantify cost avoidance Track electricity, natural gas, water, and sewage
7
Energy Savings In 2010, awarded $2.4 million dollars to produce “shovel ready” projects for energy saving projects Used as the County’s “Green Account” to fund future energy efficient and sustainable projects Worked with companies Alpha Controls, Siemens Building Technologies, and Elkhorn Chemical Company to create 16 projects Examples: lighting retrofits, window upgrades, new boilers, hot water heaters, and solar panels
9
Savings Highlights More than half of the costs of the building automation system upgrades for the Government center received were covered by rebates and grants. The upgrades resulted in Energy savings of $95,000 per year. Building automation system upgrades for Valley Hi will save the County $33,000 per year in Energy savings. Reduced annual utility costs from $1,684,975 to $1,174,302, an overall operating cost savings of 30%. Energy projects planned or completed over the past two years are expected to generate annual savings of approximately $140,000.
