GEARS ARE CLASSIFIED AS FOLLOWS: SPUR GEARS HELICAL GEARS SPIRAL GEARS BEVEL GEARS WORM AND WORM WHEEL RACK AND PINION INTERNAL GEARS

4 1) SPUR GERAS SPUR GEARS ARE USED WHEN THE AXIS OF SHAFTS ARE PARALLEL TO EACH OTHER. THIS GEARS HAVE TEETH PARALLEL TO THE AXIS OF THE SHAFTS.

5 ADVANTAGES OF SPUR GEAR
SPUR GEAR HAVE HOGH POWER TRANSMISSION EFFICIENCY. THEY ARE COMPACT AND EASY TO INSTALL. THEY OFFER CONSTANT VELOCITY RATIO. SPUR GEAR ARE HIGHLY RELIABLE. UNLIKE BELT DRIVE, SPUR GEARS DRIVE HAVE NO SLEEP.

6 DISADVANTAGES OF SPUR GEAR
SPUR GEAR DRIVES ARE COASTLY WHEN COMPARE TO BELT DRIVE. THEY HAVE A LIMITED CENTRE DISTANCE. SPUR GEAR PRODUCE A LOT OF NOISE WHEN OPERATING A HIGH SPEED. THEY CAN NOT BE USED FOR LONG DISTANCE POWER TRANSMISSION

7 2) HELICAL GERAS IN HELICAL GEARS THE TEETH ARE AT SOME ANGLE CALLED HELIX ANGLE WITH RESPECT TO AXIS OF SHAFT.

8 ADVANTAGES OF HELICAL GEAR
HELICAL GEARS ARE HIGHLY DURABLE AND ARE IDEAL FOR HIGH LOAD APPLICATION. THE ANGELED TEETH ENGAGED MORE GRADUALLY THEN DO SPUR GEAR TEETH CAUSING THEM TO RUN MORE SMOOTHLY AND QUITLY. AT ANY GIVEN TIME THEIR LOAD IS DISTRIBUTED OVER SEVERAL TEETH, RESTING IN LESS WEAR. CAN TRANSMIT MOTION AND POWER BETWWEN EITHER PARALLEL OR RIGHAT ANGLE SHAFT.

9 DISADVANTAGE OF HELICAL GEAR
RESULTANT THRUST ALONG THE AXIS OF THE GEAR, EHICH NEED TO BE ACCOMODATED BY APPROPRIATE THRUST BEARING, AND A GREATER DEEGREE OF SLIDING FRICTION BETWEEN THE MESHING TEETH. 2) EFFICIENCY OF HELICAL GEAR IS LESS BECAUSE HELICAL GEAR TRAINS HAVE SLIDING CONTACT BETWEEN THE TEETH WHISH IN TURNS PRODUCE AXIAL THRUST OF GEAR SHAFT AND GENERATED MORE HEAT.SO, MORE POWER LOSS AND LESS EFFICIENCY.

10 3) SPIRAL GEARS SPIRAL GEARS ARE USED TO TRANSMIT POWER FROM ONE SHAFT TO ANOTHER SHAFT WHICH ARE NON PARALLEL AND NON INTERSECTING. SPIRAL GEARS ARE ALSO CALLED AS SCEW GEARS OR CROSSED HELICAL GEARS.

11 4)BEVEL GEARS WHEN POWER IS REQUIRED TO BE TRANSMITTED FROM ONE SHAFT TO ANOTHER SHAFT WHICH ARE INTERSECTING TO EACH OTHER THEN BEVEL GEARS ARE USED. GENERALLY , THE ANGLE BETWEEN TO SHAFT IS 90⁰. THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF BEVEL GEARS. STRAIGHT BEVEL GEARS SPIRAL BEVEL GEARS

THE GEAR MAKES IF POSSIBLE TO CHANGE THE OPERATING ANGLE. 2) DEFFERING OF THE NUMBER OF TEETH ON EACH WHEEL ALLOWS MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE TO BE CHANGED. 3) BY INCREASING OR DECREASING THE RATIO OF TEETH BETWEEN THE DRIVE AND DRIVEN WHEELS ONE MAY CHANGED THE RATIO OF ROTATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO MEANING THAT THE ROTATIONAL DRIVE AND TORQUE OF THE SECOND WHEEL CAN BE CHANGED IN RELATION TO THE FIRST, WITH SPEED INCREASING AND TORQUE DECREASING OR SPEED DEACREISING AND TORQUE INCREASING.

13 DISADVANTAGES OF BEVEL GEAR
ONE WHEEL OF SUCH GEAR IS DESIGNED TO WORK WITH ITS COMPLEMENTRY WHEEL AND NO OTHER. MUST BE PRECISELY MOUNTED. THE SHAFTS’ BEARINGS MUST BE CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING SIGNIFICANT FORCES.

14 5) WORM AND WORM WHEEL WORM AND WORM WHEEL ARE USED TO TRANSMIT POWER FROM THE SHAFT TO ANOTHER SHAFT WHICH ARE NON INTERSECTING AND THEIR AXIS ARE NORMALLY AT RIGHT ANGLE TO EACH OTHER. WORM AND WORM WHEEL ARE USED FOR LARGE SPEED REDUCTION UPTO 100:1.

WORM GEAR DRIVES OPERATE SILENTLY AND SMOOTHLY. THEY ARE SELF-LOCKING. THEY OCCUPY LESS SPACE. THEY HAVE GOOD MESHING EFFECTIVENESS. THEY CAN BE USED FOR REDUCING SPEED AND INCRESING TORQUE.

16 DISADVANTAGES OF WORM AND WORM-WHEEL
WORM GEAR MATERIALS ARE EXPENSIVE. WORM DRIVES HAVE HIGH POWER LOSSES. POTENTIAL FOR CONSIDERABLE SLIDING ACTION, LEADING TO LOW EFFICIENCY. THEY PRODUCE A LOT OF HEAT.

17 6)RACK AND PINION RACK AND PINION IS A SPECIAL CASE OF SPUR GEAR IN WHICH ONE GEAR HAVING INFINITE DIAMETER CALLED AS RACK. THE RACK AND PINION IS USED TO TRANSMIT THE ROTARY MOTION INTO RECIPROCATING MOTIOON OR VISE-VERSA.

CHEAP. COMPACT. ROBUST. EASIEST WAY TO CONVERT ROTATION MOTION INTO LINEAR MOTION. EASIER AND MORE COMPACT CONTROL OVER THE VEHICAL.

19 DISADVANTAGES OF RACK AND PINION
SINCE BEING THE MOST ANCIENT, THE WHEEL IS ALSO THE MOST CONVENIENT AND SOME WHAT MORE EXTENSIVE IN TERMS OF ENERGY TOO. 2) DUE TO THE APPERENT FRICTION, YOU WOULD ALREADY HAVE GUESSED JUST HOW MUCH OF THE POWER BEING INPUT GIVES IN TERMS OF OUTPUT, A LOT OF THE FORCE APPLIED TO THE MECHANISM IS BURNED UP IN OVERCOMING FRICTION, TO BE MORE PRECISE SOMEWHAT AROUND 80% OF THE OVERALL FORCE IS BURNED TO OVERCOME ONE.

20 7) INTERNAL GEARS IN INTERNAL GEARS THE TEETH OF GEARS MESH INTERNALLY WITH EACH OTHER. IN TNERNAL GEAR THE LARGER GEAR IS CALLED ANNULAR WHEEL AND SMALLER GEAR IS CALLED PINION.
