Opening Objectives WHAT IS ENERGY? How is it transferred ? What are the types of energy?
2
Think-Pair-Share Grab your pair buddy and talk about what you think energy is and why it is important.
3
Key terms Energy Potential energy Kinetic energy Transfer Work Heat temperature
4
What are Energy and work? Energy is defined as the ability to do work. Work is defined as the transfer of energy.
5
Video Slide Here is a video showing the many ways that energy is used on a regular basis and even some not so regular.
6
Types of energy There are two main types of energy that we will focus on in this unit. Potential energy And Kinetic energy
7
Types of energy (cont.) Potential energy is energy stored due to an object’s position. Ex. A rock sitting at the edge of a cliff has potential energy. If the rock falls, the potential energy will be converted to kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is energy of a moving object. Ex. A car driving up a hill is kinetic energy but when it stops at the top it becomes potential energy.
8
Fun facts about energy Energy is never created or destroyed; it merely changes forms. Most types of energy are either a form of kinetic energy or potential energy. Plants use energy from sunlight during an important process called photosynthesis. A person standing on a diving board above a swimming pool has gravitational potential energy.
9
Critical connection When you get home today make a list of all the things you do. Next determine whether or not it requires potential or kinetic energy. When we return we will compare our list to see which we use more.
10
Closing objectives What energy is. The ability to do work. What work is. The transfer of energy. Types of energy. Potential- stored energy Kinetic –energy In motion
