Eclipse: An event which one object in space casts a shadow on another object. Eclipses are named for what is being blocked from view. Lunar Eclipse: Earth comes directly between the Sun and a Full Moon. Resulting in the moon being darkened by the Earth’s shadow. Umbra: Smaller, inner shadow – area of total eclipse Penumbra: Larger, outer shadow – area of partial eclipse Solar Eclipse: When the New Moon comes directly between the Sun and the Earth. Part or all of the Sun is blocked from view by the Moon.
