The Scarlet Ibis Grindstone –a rotating solid stone wheel used for sharpening, shaping Prim – precise or proper, as persons or behavior; stiffly neat. Caul – covering head of child at birth Invalid-an infirm or sickly person Idle- not working ; still Piazza –an open square or public place in a city or town Burden-that which is carried; load Sullenly –showing irritation or ill humor by gloomy appearance

Haul – to cart or transport; to carry Imminent –likely to occur at any moment; near Barring – except for Enfolding – to wrap or envelope Iridescent – lustrous colors like those of rainbow Vortex –something regarded as drawing into its powerful current everything that surrounds it: Serene - peaceful Infallible- trustworthy Blighted- any cause of impairment, destruction, ruin Withered-to shrivel; fade; decay

Figurative Language Symbolism – something that represents another idea or person, place or thing Metaphor – direct comparison of two objects without using like or as – It is raining cats and dogs. Simile – comparison of two objects using like or as – They named him William Armstrong, which was like tying a big tail on a small kite. – Boy’s name didn’t fit his body; like a big tail to small kite.
