Steampunk: Steam-powered Art

What is Steampunk, anyway? It's a writing, art, fashion and design genre that combines the romantic Victorian age with the steam-powered technology of the industrial revolution. It became popular in the 1980's and early 1990's. It is currently enjoying a resurgence.

The term “steampunk” was coined by author K.W. Jeter when he was looking for a term to describe stories set in a 19th century time period with mechanical elements similar to H.G. Wells' The Time Machine & 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea by Jules Verne.

Time travel, futurism, dirigibles, steam & spring power, gears & vintage machinery are all part of the steampunk image.

Since the 1990's the steampunk genre has expanded beyond recognizable historical periods to works set in fantasy worlds where steam- or spring-powered technology is used. “HMS Ophelia” by Delen on deviantart.com

Steampunk has found its way into movies and comics, too.

How about a steam-powered guitar?

Steampunk jewelry often utilizes watch parts and gears. Items can be attached with glue.

Steampunk collage can incorportate many different items. They must work together to create a good composition. What kind of balance did the artist use in this work?

Fairy tale themes are sometimes used in Steampunk, or stories are “steampunked” when an artist draws illustrations for the book in the steam- punk style. Which figure do you think is the emphasis in this picture?

A classic artwork like the Mona Lisa can even be steampunked. List 5 steampunk images that have been added to this picture.

These are items from the 1st Steampunk Art Exhibition of Moore High School artwork at the Moore Public Library.

The centerpiece of the Steampunk Exhibition was a real guitar that had been carved into, had speakers, wires, and gears glued onto it. It also had a metal music holder mounted to the top of it. A steampunk respirator mask hung from the top of the neck of the guitar.

Your assignment will be to create a Steampunk collage piece that has good composition, interesting elements, and an image that is the main emphasis. Using the elements of texture and the principle of balance will make your artwork a quality piece. Visual Graphic Art students will do this with digital pictures. For Art 1 & Art 2 classes, we will discuss several methods that you can use to attach pictures, papers, and 3-D items onto your picture plane. These will include glue sticks, Elmer's glue, brass fasteners, and punching holes and tying things on with string or ribbon.

As always, when making any project, remember that you are making a piece of art. It should have a theme. With Steampunk, it is usually easier to have a story in mind that goes with your picture, so that the elements you choose for your work have a unity. Start by choosing the photo of a person or main item, then build your picture around that.
