1
The distributive property and factoring an expression
2
Review the distributive property Simplify: -4(8m + 6)
3
Review the distributive property Simplify: -9(7r - 4)
4
Review the distributive property Simplify: 6(8n + 4n)
5
Review the distributive property Simplify: m(m + 5)
6
Review the distributive property Simplify: 5t(m – 6t)
7
Review the distributive property Simplify: -8b(-4 – 3b)

Review the distributive property https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-seventh-grade- math/cc-7th-variables-expressions/cc-7th-manipulating- expressions/v/combining-like-terms-and-the-distributive- property https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-seventh-grade- math/cc-7th-variables-expressions/cc-7th-manipulating- expressions/v/combining-like-terms-and-the-distributive- property https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrR_JdSGVwU
9
Use the distributive property to simplify this expression *note when you have the distributive property in a problem, you need to solve that first! 8(x 2 + 3) – 3x 2 + 10
10
Simplify *distributive first 12 – 8(5r + 6) + 2r
11
Simplify *distributive first -8m + 4m 2 -7(5m + 3) + 2m 2
12
Simplify *distributive first st + 4s – 9s(t + 5)
13
Factoring an expression This means you take out factors that are common in terms of the expression Example – the expression 12b + 8 Factors of 12 = 2 · 2 · 3 Factors of 8 = 2 · 2 · 2 So the greatest common factor is 4
14
Factoring an expression So the greatest common factor is 4 Take out the GCF of each number So… 12b + 8 = 4(3b) + 4(2) = 4(3b+2)
15
Factor (kind of like distributing backwards) 18g – 27 )18g – 27 (what can you take out?) 9 )18g – 27 2g - 3 9 )18g – 279(2g-3)

17
Factor 11x + 55 11 ( x + 5)
18
Factor 24q + 8 8( 3q + 1)
19
Factor 9 + 6s 3( 3 + 2s)
20
Factor 3xy + 6x 3x( y + 2)
21
Factor 45r 2 + 5r 5r( 9r + 1)
22
Factor xy 2 + 4xy xy( y+ 4)
23
Factor 36rt – 6r 6r( 6t – 1)
