3. Symbolism A symbol has meaning in itself, but stands for something else. However, a symbol is not what it symbolizes. For example, a dove is a bird, but when used as a symbol it represents peace. If the dove dies, peace does not die.

4. Likewise, the American flag is a piece of cloth with red and white bars and white stars on a blue field. It symbolizes the United States of America and, to some, freedom. However, if someone burned the flag, the only thing that has been destroyed is a piece of cloth. The United States still exists, as well as freedom.
