DIALECT Definition: the form of language spoken by people in a particular region or group *may involve changes to the pronunciation, vocabulary, and syntax of standard English

IRONY Definition: the general term for literary techniques that portray differences between appearance and reality, or expectation and result

CHARACTERIZATION Definition: the act of creating and developing a character Direct Characterization: the author directly states a character’s traits. *Example: “She was one of those pretty, charming young women…” Indirect Characterization: the author provides clues about a character by describing what a character looks like, does, and says, as well as how other characters react to him or her. The reader must draw conclusions about the character based on this indirect information. *The most effective indirect characterizations usually result from showing characters acting or speaking.
