BODY LANGUAGE Communication that uses gesture, posture, and facial expressions instead of words

OPEN BODY POSITION Arms and Legs not crossed in any way Arms may be open and moving Hands and palms relaxed and expressive Legs parallel or even in a wide stance Feet facing the front or a person of interest Solid, comfortable eye contact Nothing between observer and observee

CLOSED BODY POSITION The body literally closes up-from just bringing limbs to the torso to curled up into a ball-extreme cases may include rocking the body to and fro One or both arms cross the body’s center-folded or tightly clasped-holding one another Legs crossed in some manner Leaning on a convenient object or wrapping legs around something Looking down or away Placing object between observee and observer

ANGER Neck and/or face red or flushed Teeth bared or a snarl Fists clenched Leaning forward into another’s personal space Eyes squinting- eyebrows down and tight

FEAR-NERVOUS-ANXIOUS Pale face Trembling caused by tense muscles Eyes and head constantly moving Hiding in some manner Chest contracted Eyes wide-eyebrows raised

SAD Drooping body Eyes down and sometimes almost closed or blinking rapidly Tears Mouth turned down Eyebrows downward

EMBARRASSED-SHY Face and/or neck red or flushed Head down-eyes may be looking somewhat upward Avoiding eye contact Grimacing and/or a false and insincere smile

SURPRISE-SHOCK Wide eyes-raised eyebrows Mouth open wide- sometimes in an “0” A sudden movement back If happy-an open body position If unhappy-a closed body position

HAPPY Smile Eyes open and upward-eyebrows lifted Cheeks lifted Open and lifted body position
