How many of you have gone to Home Depot/Lowes or have painted before?

Look at the paint color models. How do they get the color paint that they want? If you have painted before, how do you get the specific color you want if you don’t already have it? How do you get a Forest Green or a Pastel Yellow?

A RATIO Based on our discussion, what do you think the word ratio means?

INTRODUCTION TO RATIOS OBJECTIVES: SWBAT Write and distinguish among ratios as part- to-part and part-to-whole relationships. SWBAT Represent ratios using models.

Notes: A Ratio is a comparison of two quantities There are two types of ratios: Part-to-Part & Part-to- Whole

Let’s Model This!

Watch Me Compare! Compare red paint to white paint: 3 parts red paint to 2 parts white paint. Compare white paint to red paint: 2 parts white paint to 3 parts red paint. Compare red to total parts: 3 parts red paint to 5 whole parts Compare white to total parts: 2 parts white paint to 5 whole parts WHITE RED WHITE RED

Part-to-Part vs Part-to-Whole The first two comparisons we made are part-to-part ratios. We compared parts of red paint to parts of white paint o The last two comparisons we made are part-to-whole ratios. o We compared one of the parts (either white or red) to the total amount of parts or whole parts.

Using the word “to”With a ColonIn Fractional Form Part-to-Part Ratios 2 parts white paint to every 3 parts red paint 3 parts red paint to every 2 parts white paint 3 parts red paint : 2 parts white paint 2 parts white paint : 3 parts red paint WHITE RED WHITE RED

Using the word “to”With a ColonIn Fractional Form Part-to-Whole Ratios 3 parts red paint to every 5 total parts 3 parts red paint : 5 total parts 2 parts white paint to every 5 total parts 2 parts white paint : 5 total parts WHITE RED WHITE RED

Quick Note:

You Try! WHITE RED

PRACTICE! 1) Write a part-to-part ratio using the word “to” comparing the number of triangles to the number of stars 5 stars to 3 triangles

2) Ms. K loves pizza! She attends a party at a friend’s house and they’re serving pizza. You figure out that there is enough pizza for each person to have only 2 slices. Give a part-to-part ratio comparing the number of pizza slices for each person in fractional form. 2 slices of pizza/1 person

3) You are given the ratio 2:4. Write a scenario that would represent this part-to-whole ratio. During the softball game, I was at bat 4 times and got 2 hits.

4) Ms. K goes to the video store with her brother Eddie. They both work together to choose 10 movies to watch. Eddie chooses 5 Comedy movies. Ms. K chooses 3 Documentaries and 2 Action movies. Write the ratio that expresses the relationship using a colon. Identify whether it is a part-to-part or part-to-whole ratio. a. Comedy movies to Documentaries Part-to-Part 5 comedy movies : 3 documentaries b. Action Movies to total movies Part-to-Whole 2 Action Movies : 10 total movies
