TOURNAMENT SEASON o Individuals can participate in up to 10 tournaments a season o 3 debate only o 5 speech/debate combined o 2 speech only o Excluding district & state tournaments o Exceeding more will make an individual ineligible

POLICY DEBATE AKA: Team Debate is a series of contention-quote-analysis organized argumentation between two teams of two members each. Two sides to the debate Affirmative: attempts to show something wrong with the present system (status quo) and thus change is needed. Negative: which usually takes the position that the present system is acceptable, that no problem exists to an extent that warrants or justifies a change. Aff sits on judges left Neg sits on judges right Time Limits 8 Minutes 3 Minutes 5 Minutes

LINCOLN- DOUGLAS DEBATE “One-on-one” argumentation Value resolutions: Moral value resolutions: state that something is good or bad in an ethical sense Artistic value resolutions: state that something is pleasing or displeasing to our senses Political Value resolutions: state preferences in political philosophies.

LINCOLN- DOUGLAS CONT. DUTIES OF THE SPEAKER Aff is required to uphold an analysis of the value(s) implied in the resolution Neg may choose To uphold a countervailing analysis of the value(s) implied in the resolution Offer a straight refutation of the Aff’s position Offer a combination of counter analysis and refutation Both Speakers bear the burden of clash in rebuttal speeches; that is, each must speak to his/her opponent’s position in the debate

TIME LIMITS FOR LD 6 minutes – affirmative constructive speeches 3 minutes- cross examination by negative 7 minutes- negative constructive speeches 3 minutes- cross-examination by affirmative 4 minutes- affirmative rebuttal 6 minutes- negative rebuttal 3 minutes- affirmative rebuttal 3 minutes-down time

PUBLIC FORUM DEBATE Audience friendly debate Focuses on advocacy of a position derived from the issues presented in the resolution Begins with a flip of a coin between the competing teams Determine sides and speaker position Test skills in argumentation, cross-examination, and refutation

PF COIN TOSS The team that wins the flip may choose one of two options The side of the topic they wish to defend Pro or con Speaking position Begin the debate or end the debate The Team that loses the flip gets to make the remaining choice Once everything decided the debate can begin Debate may begin with a con speech

GROUP A SPEECH EVENTS Duo Interpretations: 10 minutes max Expository Speech: 7 minutes max Informative speech about an idea, process, theory, person, place, or a thing Extemporaneous Speaking: 7 minutes max Draw Event, 3 topics choose one, 30 minutes to prepare Panel Discussion: 40 minute round No formal speeches, no prepared notes or material

Panel Discussion 40 minute round No formal speeches, no prepared notes or material Radio/Broadcast Journalism: 5:30-6 minutes max Draw Event, 30 minute prep, 3 pieces of news, original commercial, editorial commentary about a previous news piece Retold Story Draw Event, 30 minute prep

GROUP B EVENTS After Dinner Speaking (ADS): 4-6 minutes Should imitate a banquet situation Humorous/ Serious Interpretation: 10 minutes maximum Uses material from one or more pieces of prose, poetry, or drama Impromptu Speaking: 2-4 minutes Draw Event; contestants draw three topics, choose one, and may use 60 seconds prep time. Topics will be: news items for one round, abstract words for one round, and quotations for one round.

GROUP B CONT. Oratorical Analysis: 10 minutes max. Non-original speech, portions thereof, or cuttings of various speeches by one “real life” speaker Analysis of the oratory or speech Original Oratory: 10 minutes max. Original, memorized persuasive speech. Salesmanship: 3-7 minutes + 2 min. questioning by judge only Sell a single legitimate product
