History/Background Centered in France Copied some of the characteristics of Impressionism, but completely changed others.

Characteristics Unnatural or arbitrary colors were used to express emotion Visible brushstrokes Pointillism Dots Swirling brushstrokes Distort forms to express emotion –Ex: Geometric shapes Real life subject matter

Paul Cezanne Worked in isolation and had few friends Probably most famous for his still lifes.

$$$$$$ Believe it or not, the most money paid for a painting was also one done by Cezanne. Called The Card Players Sold for 250 million dollars in 2011.

Vincent Van Gogh Multiple mental illnesses Almost always broke, he was financially supported by his brother. He would sometimes starve himself so he could afford to buy art supplies. Fired from many jobs including one as a preacher Painted 70 canvases in the last 70 days of his life Committed suicide at the age of 37 He shot himself. He died in his brother’s arms 2 days later. Devastated, his brother died 6 months later. He sold only 1 painting during his lifetime

Sunflowers Van Gogh tried to sell his series of sunflowers for 80 dollars. No one would buy it. Later, it sold for 40 million.

Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear Van Gogh cut off part of his ear after a fight with fellow artist, Paul Gaugin. He then wrapped it in a handkerchief and took it to a prostitute. He told her “Guard this object carefully.” He then went home and almost bled to death.

Georges Seurat One of the founders of Neo- Impressionism. Neo-impressionism was also called pointillism; however, pointillism was viewed as a negative term for this style of painting.
