2 Objectives Gain knowledge and understanding of sociocultural factors contributing to anorexia nervosa. Gain knowledge and understanding of key research, e.g. Anne Becker’s ‘Fiji study’. Be able to outline and evaluate psychodynamic interpretations of anorexia nervosa (AN)

3 Sociocultural factors Anorexia nervosa (AN) has been identified in all cultures that have been studied. However, exposure to Western influence and ideals (mainly through media) increases the incidents of AN. For example Anne Becker’s ‘Fiji study’. Yet not all develop eating disorder, so must be factors that make some more vulnerable:  Low self esteem.  Perfectionism (possible OCD)  High social anxiety.  Over involved parents, making a child feel that they lack independence = ENMESHMENT.

4 Psychodynamic interpretations of anorexia nervosa  Bruch (1973). Attempt by the individual to exert some sort of control (major theme). Need to feel autonomous – independent from parents.  Crisp (1980). Starvation leads to postponement of menstruation in pre-pubertal girls. Proposed that this was an attempt to postpone the stress of adulthood.  Minuchin et al. (1978). Family systems approach. Child develops AN as a means of diverting attention away from other family problems. It is an irrational way to try to maintain family unity.

5 AO2. Evaluation of psychodynamic explanations of AN One strength Two criticisms/limitations.
