Key Terms ATR- Stands for audio tape recorder. Cardioid- Heart shaped pickup pattern of a unidirectional microphone. Condenser Microphone- High quality, sensitive microphone for critical sound pickup. DAT- Stands for Digital Audio Tape.

Key Terms Dynamic Microphone – A relatively rugged microphone. Good for outdoor use. Fader- A volume control that works by sliding a button horizontally along a specific scale. Hypercardiod – A very narrow pickup pattern with a long reach. The microphone can also hear sounds coming directly back. Jack - A socket or receptacle for a connector. Lavaliere - A small microphone that is clipped to clothing.

Key Terms Mini plug - Connector used for some consumer audio equipment. Omni directional - Pick up pattern with which the microphone can hear equally well from all directions. Pick up pattern - The territory around the microphone within which the microphone can be heard well.

Key Terms Polar Pattern - The two- dimensional representation of the microphone pickup pattern. Pop Filler - A wire mesh screen attached to the front of a microphone that reduces breath pops and sudden air blasts.

Key Terms VU Meter - Measures volume units, the relative loudness of amplified sound. Windscreen - Acoustic Foam rubber that is put over the entire microphone to cut down wind noise. Gain - The intensity of the microphone.
