Writing Business Letters

Why Write Business Letters Inform businesses of positive and negative interactions and products that you experienced there. Positive Example: If you went to Universal Orlando and had a great experience at Diagon Alley with a “wizard,” you’d write to Universal to explain your experience. Negative Example: If you bought a Pepsi and found a cockroach in it. You’d write to Pepsi and tell them about the incident.

Tips for Writing Business Letters Be positive, even if the letter is going to be negative. Tell them you like their business, but there are some things they can improve and then tell them the situation. Use proper grammar and higher level vocabulary. (That does not mean use the thesaurus for every word! Just don’t use works like cool, awesome, interesting, very, horrible, etc.) Try not to sound like a student in a class writing a letter. Do not say that you are writing for a school project. They will be less likely to take you seriously.

Tips Continued… Follow the proper format for business letters that you are given. Businesses do take this into consideration. Do not directly ask for something for free. If they want to give you something free they may, but they may not. It is their prerogative. Send the letter in a business envelope that is white. Do not wrinkle the letter, scent the letter, spill coffee on the letter, or step on the letter with mud.

Who do I write to? Choose a company that you want to compliment or complain to. This can be an amusement park, clothing company, candy company, restaurant, etc. There are some places that just won’t respond. Remember to get the address from the real company’s website. Use Google type in the business name then “corporate address” or look on their website under Contact Us. Do not write to their Local Chili’s…write to the head of the corporation. You need to bring a stamp to mail the letter.
