Physical Health Most basic reason, it is a matter of survival. A person can go many days without eating…15- 20 easily. Malnutrition is common in many 3 rd World countries.

In Industrialized countries such as the United States, Obesity is more of an issue. However there are also malnourished as well.

A person can only go a matter of 2-3 days without water.

Provides energy and stamina Without new sources coming in the body will go to those that are stored.

Provides for growth and maintenance of the body Many parts of the body are in a continual state of repair and replenishment.

Environment Culture Our ethnic Background. In past we ate what our ancestors had eaten.

Religious background Some religions have restrictions on food. Muslims can’t eat pork Hindus don’t eat beef Catholics don’t eat meat during Lent

Events We tie certain foods to certain events and when things are different we notice.

Family and Friends What weird things does your family eat? We often eat the same things our friends and family eat.

Advertising Lots of money is spent on advertising because it works. In many households the children make many of the purchasing decisions, so advertisers aim to them.
