Grammar Conditionals 1.Zero Conditional:to describe rules, and situations where one event always follows the other.here If = when eg. If you freeze water, it turns to ice. If you are kind to others, they are kind to you.
17
If you eat a lot of chocolate, you put on weight. The Pattern:If+present Simple, Present Simple First Conditional We use the First Conditional: 1. To talk about possible future events which depend on other future events: eg. If the rain stops, the match will begin. If people don’t stop polluting the air, animals and plants will soon die. If you have time, we can go there this evening. The pattern is: If +Present Simple, will/won’t do
18
2.to give someone advice or an order, and make a suggestion or a request. eg. If you feel sleepy,go to bed. If she comes, phone me. If you want an interesting day out, visit the Science Museum. The pattern is: If +Present Simple, Imperative *In First and Zero Conditionals,we sometimes use the conjunction unless(=if…not)+Present Simple to talk about the present and the future. eg. He doesn’t wear a tie unless he has to.= He doesn’t wear a tie if he doesn’t have to.
19
I’ll fail the exam unless they postpone it. = I will fail the exam if they don’t postpone it. Second Conditional We use the Second Conditional: 1.to talk about imagined, impossible or unlikely events in the future: eg. If I became an MP(member of parliament), I would fight for animal rights.(unlikely in the future) If the sun stopped shining, plants would disappear.
20
2.to talk about impossible present situations: eg. If I lived closer to school, I wouldn’t have to get up so early.(the situation is impossible to fulfil(l) now) If I had more time, I wouldn’t eat fast food. The pattern is: If +past, would/could/might +do
