Linear Vs. Non-Linear Functions We are learning to model functions as tables, graphs and equations (rules). Monday, June 27, 2016
2
Label one graph “linear” and the other “non-linear” x x Solve for y y y 0 4 3 2 1 0 4 3 2 1 4(0)-3 0-3 -3 4(1)-3 4-3 1 4(2)-3 8-3 5 4(3)-3 12-3 9 4(4)-3 16-3 13 0 2 -10 0-10 -10 1 2 -10 1-10 -9 2 2 -10 4-10 -6 3 2 -10 9-10 4 2 -10 16-10 6 +4 +1 +3 +5 +7 “LINEAR” “NON-LINEAR”
3
With your team brainstorm characteristics of graphs, tables, and equations for both linear and non-linear functions. Characteristics of Linear Functions Characteristics of Non-Linear Functions Graph Table Equation
4
Group Practice With your group identify the representations (table and equation) for the functions and identify each as either “linear” or “non-linear.” Be sure to provide proof in complete sentences. Then explain in complete sentences what it means for a function to be linear. Next explain what it means for a function to be non-linear. Demonstrate your reasoning in more than one way.
