Fungi are often confused with plants, but they are not plants! The main differences between plants and Fungi: Fungi do not have roots Fungi do not get their energy from the sun Fungi often do not have cellulose in their cell walls Fungi are decomposers, they eat dead material and break it down, feeding through the process of absorption. Kindom Fungi (not plants!)
3
They perform photosynthesis (6H 2 0 + 6CO 2 C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 ) They have cells walls made of cellulose They are immobile Their life cycle is an alternation of generations So what is a plant?
4
Water supports these plants, so they don’t need the same structure as land plants to The water also keeps them from drying out! Most water plants fall into the following categories: Green algae Brown algae Red algae 1 st of 3 groups of plants: Aquatic plants
5
As oceans got too crowded, some plants moved onto the land, but it wasn’t easy: Gravity weighs them down They could dry out! Without water to carry their genetic info to other plants, how does it get there? The transition to land
6
They developed: strong stems to fight gravity deep root systems to pull water up into them and a vascular system to transport it around their “bodies” flowers to spread their pollen by wind, insect and animal Seeds to protect and transport fertilized genetic material (well some of them did this…not all) How did plants do it?
