Sickness The native Americans could get really sick from the diseases that the Spanish brought such as measles, smallpox, and typhoid. They were so sick some even died. Most of the diseases were caused by dirty living like were they lived was very dirty and there floors were just dirt. If someone in there tribe would get sick it would spread very quickly because they all live together in one tribe.

Mission Life The barracks were crowded and dirty. Men's and women's barracks were separated. They were made of adobe bricks and were painted white. They were small rooms with more than one person sleeping on a wooden bench or on the floor.

The Indians built the mission buildings. They also plowed the fields. The Indians farmed and herded the cattle. The Indians cooked the food for the Spanish. The Indians provided everything that the Spanish needed. Working For Spanish

Ever-Growing Punishments Did you know that long ago, Padres brought Native Americans to a mission that they now call Mission San Diego de Acala? They were brought to the mission (which wasn’t even there yet) to build the mission and work as slaves. If an Indian even tried to escape, he/she was whipped, and if trying to escape several times, were killed! Even if an Indian broke the smallest rule, he/she was punished! If an Indian actually escaped, they sometimes found, brought back, whipped, then killed. Poor defenseless Indians!
