Lesson 2.3 Simplifying Variable Expressions Essential Question: How do you simplify variable expressions?
2
Before we start… How would you organize the following items?
3
Before we start… Can you write the following in a simpler form?
4
What is a variable expression? We can simplify variable expressions. Numbers Operations Variables
5
What is a term? The parts of an expression that are added together terms
6
What is a coefficient? The number part of a term with a variable part coefficient
7
What are … Constant terms? A number part but no variable Like terms? Have the same variable part Constant terms are also like terms.
8
Identify the terms, like terms, coefficients, and constant terms of the expression:
11
How do you simplify variable expressions? Use the distributive property if necessary. Combine like terms. – Add the coefficients of the variable terms – Add the constant terms
12
How do you combine like terms? Draw lines in front of each + or – to separate all the terms Color all like terms the same color Put each group of like terms together Simplify each group into one single term

School Supplies You are purchasing pens and pencils to be sold at the school store. You need a total of 50 boxes of pens and pencils. The pens cost $3 per box and the pencils cost $2 per box. Let p be the number of boxes of pens you purchase. Write and simplify an expression in terms of p for the total cost of the pens and pencils.

Fitness You work out each day after school by jogging around a track and swimming laps in a pool. You spend a total of 45 minutes jogging and swimming. You burn 14 calories per minute when jogging and 8 calories per minute when swimming. Let j be the time you jog (in minutes). Write an expression in terms of j for the total calories you burn during your workout. Then find the total number of calories burned if you jog for 20 minutes.
30
Exercise Your daily workout plan involves a total of 50 minutes of running and swimming. You burn 15 calories per minute when running and 9 calories per minute when swimming. Let r be the number of minutes that you run. Find the number of calories you burn in your 50 minute workout if you run for 20 minutes.
31
Posters You are making a rectangular poster to advertise a school fundraiser. You want the poster to be twice as long as it is wide. Let w represent the width of the poster. a.Write and simplify an expression in terms of w for the perimeter of the poster. b.Write and simplify an expression in terms of w for the area of the poster.
