3 Counting Syllables The basic unit of English rhythm is the syllable. For the following words, clap or tap the desk for each syllable. How many syllables are in each word, question, or sentence? 4 The Past Tense Sometimes the ‘ed’ is pronounced as an extra syllable, and sometimes it is not. Plant / Planted – 1 / 2 (extra syllable) Laugh / Laughed – 1 / 1 (no extra syllable) Fold / Folded – 1 / 2 (extra syllable) Watch / Watched – 1 / 1 (no extra syllable)
