2 Math Writing What do you already know about place value?
It is the value of where the digit is in the number

3 Place Value We write our numbers using 10 symbols called DIGITS

4 Place Value The placement of our numbers is important!

5 Place Value What happens when we have more than ten?
Let’s use the number 12 as an example

6 Place Value If we have 10 or more, we start a “tens” column, writing down how many “tens” we have, followed by how many “ones” Tens Ones 1 2

7 Place Value We can write this as one “ten” and two “ones”

8 Place Value 3 “tens” and 5 “ones” 3 x x 1 Tens Ones 3 5

9 Place Value If we have 1 “ten” but 0 “ones”, we would place a zero in that column Tens Ones 1

10 Place Value What would happen if we didn’t put the 0 in the “ones” place and just wrote the 1? Tens Ones 1

12 Place Value If we have 100 or more, we need to start another column
