Service Activities: When I would first arrive, the participants would usually be involved in various activities. Some might be working on the skills items in their folders, while others were working on an interactive game in small groups, or even on a free period. Within each participant’s folder, there are tabs of skills that he/she can be working on that is specific to them. Each participant is at a different level and has a special set of skills unique to them. One of my favorite times that I had at LIFE was being able to help one of the participants write checks and balance his checkbook. Beginning or lower-functioning individuals may have skills to work on such as: using scissors, recognizing colors, and memorizing their phone number. The participants also go on field trips to help them better integrate into society and become more comfortable and interested in community involvement and participation. I was invited to go on field trips with the participants every week, which included places such as: Cabella’s and other stores, museums, parks, etc. Class: ED-SPED 350: Teaching Students with Exceptionalities Spring 2010 Instructor: Dr. Michael Humphrey Community Partner: LIFE Inc. Mission Statement: We at Living Independently Forever, Inc. (LIFE, Inc.) make a professional and emotional commitment to each of our participants. Our Residential Habilitation and Development Disability Agency services and supports will always lead the industry in quality and participant satisfaction. We strive to demonstrate ingenuity, respect and dedication to promote individuality, freedom of choice, and a safe environment for all participants. Service Project: I assisted in developmental therapy during my time at LIFE. This consisted of working on intensive training skills to help them improve functional skill level, achieve independence, increase self-help skills, mobility, learning, receptive and expressive language, self- direction, capacity for independent living, economic self- sufficiency, and decrease maladaptive behaviors. The program really strives to promote community inclusion and participation, relationship building with peers, and positive social behaviors…while taking part in fun and enjoyable activities. Learning Goals: To provide services required from non- school-based organizations which strive to enhance our post-secondary outcomes, educational services, social services and/or familial services for students with exceptionalities. Reflection: This has been an incredible experience for me. I feel like a much more well-rounded person compared to when I began this class as well as the service learning experience. A combination of the course content and my instructor has really taught me information and best practices to utilize in and outside of the classroom setting which I feel have tremendously increased my sensitivity and ability to work with people and students with exceptionalities. I feel that I have definitely been educated and informed about specific terms used incorrectly in our society that have defined people with exceptionalities. I have also learned logistical practices and what will be my responsibility as a future educator to help my students and follow the appropriate legal procedures.
