1 OVERVIEW Organizations learn how to internationalize as they finds their own distinctive way of doing it. There is no template for internationalisation; each venture is different. But there are identifiable pitfalls that lead most firms to fail. Join us for an exciting 2-day Masterclass where you learn these main pitfalls, identify what these mean for your organization, and learn the strategies that current research shows to be effective ways of avoiding them. With the support of experienced ‘internationalizers’, you will then identify your best way of internationalising. The programme concludes with your testing your ideas with those who have the wisdom gained from having done it before. DAY ONE The Hurdles of Internationalisation Avoid the hurdles and make a success out of international growth by learning what experience has shown to be the major mistakes. Knowledge: The visible and (more dangerous invisible) hurdles from different regulations, norms and ways of seeing the world. Practice Exercise: Defining those hurdles that your organization will face in internationalization. Understanding: Sharing diagnoses of the different hurdles, how they have impaired, and can impair development. Strategies to Overcome the Hurdles Here we will identify the main strategies to overcome the hurdles, and see what these mean in practice. Knowledge: Overcoming the hurdles of internationalisation requires the right knowledge, relationships, and cross-border management. Practice Exercise: Identifying the knowledge, relationships and organisation approach that could overcome the hurdles and work for you in practice. Understanding: Sharing diagnoses of the different hurdles, and how they have impaired and can impair development. Formal, networking dinner Internationalisation Amazing Experience. Implementing Internationalisation Here we will identify the main strategies to overcome the hurdles, and see what these mean in practice. Internationalisation Implementation Exercise: Timing and scheduling the acquisition of knowledge, relationships, capabilities and organisation that can meet the hurdles that are likely to be faced. SPEAKERS Prof Simon Harris As Professor of International Strategy, Simon advises businesses on their international development, publishes on International Business and Strategy, and teaches at the University of Edinburgh. Simon researches how organizations develop and use relationships overseas to grow their businesses. He advises on how organisations can learn to do international business effectively and has won international awards for this research. Simon advises some of the world’s most successful businesses in Europe, Asia, North and South America. He also helps to steer the University’s Centre for Cultural Relations.
