2 Immigration and Religion As immigration increased the US became more religiously diverse. Many of the immigrants coming in to the US brought with them their religious beliefs.

3 Between 1881 and 1924 over two and a half million Jewish people immigrated into the US. There will be a major division between the German Jews and the Russian Jews.

4 The Catholic population will also increase significantly in the 1800’s. Beginning with the Irish in the 1840’s and continuing with the Germans, Italians and Poles in the last half of the century.

5 Between 1845 and 1900 about 4 million Germans immigrated to the US. Many of these people were practicing Lutherans. The Lutheran Church was divided but will slowly begin to unify and work with each other.

6 Activity: Using the flyer, answer the following question on a separate sheet of paper. Why do you think societies/organizations like the one shown were needed?
