EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES FOR TEACHING Teaching Diverse Students

Emma Lazarus Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

CREATIVE THINKING SKILLS FLUENCY FLEXIBILITY ORIGINALITY ELABORATION

BASIC ABILITIES INVOLVING DIVERGENT THINKING FluencyHow many ideas can you come up with? Fluency is the number of responses which are relevant and not repeated in the list. FlexibilityCan you think of another category or another way of looking at the ideas? Flexibility is the number of shifts to other ways of looking at the question.

BASIC ABILITIES INVOLVING DIVERGENT THINKING OriginalityCan you think of an idea that no one else has come up with? Originality is the uniqueness of a response in comparison with others of the group or a similar group. ElaborationCan you add to your ideas? Elaboration is the “fleshing out” of an idea by adding description details or relating it to other ideas.

TYPICAL QUESTIONS What is a brick? If a boy goes to the store and buys $.03 worth of candy and gives the man $.10, how much change will he get? Find the absurdity in this picture (A wheel off a car or a man hammering with the wrong end of the hammer.) Glove is to Hand as Shoe is to _______.

CREATIVITY QUESTIONS How many uses can you think of for a brick? How many different ways can you think of that will get an answer of 7? Take this toy dog and think of ways that it could be changed to bring more fun to boys and girls. Add something to the word “bolt” to give it more meaning.
