1 Lab 24Date: Acids, Bases and Indicators…oh my! Purpose Background Observe a neutralization rxn & work with indicators. Bases will turn red litmus blue Acids will turn blue litmus red Phenolphthalein turns pink in basic solution

2 Experiment - Pipet 5.0 mL of NaOH into a clean Erlenmeyer. Add 2 drops of phenolphthalein to the flask. Litmus test on NaOH, record results in table Slowly add HCl drops to the flask until a permanent color change occurs. Swirl the flask. Place about 5 mL of HCl into a grad. Cyl. Litmus test on HCl Litmus test on final solution.

3 SubstanceBlue Litmus Color Result Red Litmus Color Result Identify as Acid, Base, or Neutral NaOH HCl Neutralized Solution Litmus paper results

4 Analysis - 1.Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction in this lab; a salt and water were formed. 2.Which solution (HCl or NaOH) was more concentrated in this lab? Explain how you know. 3.What color is phenolphthalein indicator in a) acid, b) base, c) neutral solutions? 4.Explain why the final solution may have been acidic. Results -
