2. “God With US” Matthew 1: 18-25 n Names are important to most everyone. n Now more ‘name after’ than the meaning… n Even ‘nicknames’ have significance. n God didn’t leave his Son’s name in question. n Jesus a form of OT “Joshua” meaning “Yahweh saves”, it was common then. n It is still common in some communities.

3. “God With US” Matthew 1: 18-25 n n We slide right by something strange – Where does ‘Immanuel’ come in? n n How does “Jesus” relate to “Immanuel”? n n This is the only place it’s found in NT! n n Matthew shows Jesus ‘qualifies’ as Messiah: n n -descendant of David n n -he’s more than ancestry (Women/gentiles) n n -Joseph not his father

4. “God With US” Matthew 1: 18-25 n n ALL Jesus names and titles add up to “Immanuel” – God with us! n n Because God is with us he is for us (Rom 8) n n Immanuel connects unusual to ordinary. n n We don’t need to go find God, he found us. n n He is with us in good and bad! n n Because Jesus is with us we can know him! n n Jesus is precious because he’s Immanuel!
