Hand-Washing Enforcement System Hotheads (AK4) Team Project Advisor: Dr. Art Koblasz School of Electrical and Computer Engineering Georgia Institute of Technology Team Members: Sundeep Jolly, Team Leader Jin Joo Lee Umehani Dalal

Agenda Project Overview Motivation Competition Technical Objectives System Layout and Function Demonstration Procedure Problems and Issues Timeline Current Status 2

Project Overview What is the hand-washing enforcement system? An effective means of motivating hand-washing by capturing images of violators What is the primary market for the system? Hospitals and nursing homes How much will the system cost and what is the expected profit per unit? Cost per unit: expected <$2,000 Profit per unit: expected ~$1,200 3

Motivation 4 “ Approximately 1 in 10 hospitalized patients will acquire an infection after admission ” -CDC E stimate cost of these infections to the healthcare industry is $6.7 billion dollars in the US E very day, 247 people die in the USA as a result of a health care-associated infection –World Health Organization

Competing Products HyGenius Hand-Washing System Hand-washing activities of personnel are tracked by the input of a unique ID number CleanTech IC Hand-washing activities of personnel are tracked by unique RFID 5

Technical Objectives The system will be able to: Detect and distinguish between entries and exits Accurately distinguish between persons and objects Count number of room entries Count number of hand-washings Compare counts and record violations Store images of violators for later retrieval 6

System Implementation 7 Video camera detects motion and captures images of entering persons Thermal IR sensor measures temperature of passing objects to discern between persons and other objects Sensor on soap dispenser registers each time soap is dispensed corresponding to one hand-washing PC collects all data and performs all processing
