Reformed GCSE’s Will be more demanding
Have been designed for a two-year period of study Will be liner, so students will take all their exams at the end of the end of the course Non-exam assessment will be removed or reduced in the majority of GCSE’s Will have a new grading scale from 9 to 1 in English and Maths
15
Vocational qualifications KS4
25% external assessment – usually an examination Fewer opportunities to re-submit work More rigour and therefore more respected by employers and universities All BTEC courses now only recognised as being equivalent to 1 GCSE (Science – 2 GCSEs) Better preparation for progression to level 3 courses

Students will be entered for 2 GCSEs 1. Science A 2. Additional Science Both exams will be completed at the end of Year 11 to ensure the best outcomes for our students Students are also required to complete controlled assessments in the form of a: Data Analysis Task and a Case Study (Year 10) Individual Investigation (Year 11) 28/04/2017 Year 10 Information Evening
20
Pathway 2: Separate Sciences
Students will receive GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics Extra modules in all 3 Sciences - 9 exams taken at the end of Year 11 It involves an extra controlled assessment 28/04/2017 Year 10 Information Evening

Examination information
Edexcel Mathematics A specification 3 exams each 1hour 30 minutes long 1 non calculator and 2 calculator papers We keep the tiered entry but the foundation tier is more challenging, more students will be entered at this tier Foundation tier grades 1-5, Higher tier grades 4-9 Less formulae given, more to be learned. 28/04/2017 Year 10 Information Evening
25
Year 10 Information Evening
Exam schedule All pupils will be prepared to take the GCSE exam at the end of year 11 Pupils in set 1 will also be prepared to take the Additional Mathematics qualification at the end of year 11, alongside their GCSE to help prepare for A level No student will be entered early as this will result in them having an A* - G grade instead of a 1-9 grade and may disadvantage them. We also hope to enter some of our students for additional qualifications, if we have time. Year 10 Information Evening 28/04/2017
26
Additional qualifications
Additional qualifications offered alongside the GCSE as appropriate include Level 3 award in Algebra Level 2 award in Algebra or Statistics Level 1 FSMQ Money Management 28/04/2017 Year 10 Information Evening
27
What has changed.. These are the main changes:
There is much more content to be covered, some topics from higher tier are now in the foundation tier, and there is additional new content in both tiers There is more emphasis on mathematical language and rigour when explaining a solution. There is a greater focus on solving problems and application of the skills learned.
28
What should be going on at home…
During maths lessons you will be learning and practicing skills, and solving problems by applying those skills. At home you must .. Complete all homework to a good standard and ask your teacher about the things you could not do Follow up independently on any areas covered in class that you were not clear about Use resources such as the internet and revision guides or CD’s to find additional problems and examples to have a go at. Why not find problems to challenge your teacher.

English Language & English Literature
As in the past students will study for two qualifications and will (potentially) achieve two different grades: English Language (AQA) English Literature (AQA) These qualifications contain some overlap in terms of skills required, but vary in other ways. 28/04/2017 Year 10 Information Evening
31
‘Reformed’ GCSE English Language
No tiered entry – everyone sits the same paper, unlike the ‘legacy’ GCSE All exams sat at the end of Year 11 2 exams as opposed to 1 - lasting 3 hours 30 minutes total Mixture of reading/writing tasks as before Wider reading encouraged; 19th century texts now have to be studied alongside 20th/21st century texts However, no time-consuming Controlled Assessments to complete 28/04/2017 Year 10 Information Evening
32
Year 10 Information Evening
English Literature Again, some differences and some similarities: No Controlled Assessments, no tiered entry Linear structure: 2 exam papers (4 hours total) Slightly more demanding and numerous with 5 texts in total - Shakespeare, Pre-1900, Modern Text, Poetry Anthology, Unseen Poetry ‘Closed’ book exam requires knowledge of whole text rather than extracts No more ‘Of Mice and Men’! 28/04/2017 Year 10 Information Evening
33
Year 10 Information Evening
‘How can I help?’ Homework tasks throughout the term (research, writing tasks, comprehension work, draft essays, etc). Encourage reading for fun! Check progress – at least one assessed piece of work every half term. Don’t believe the ‘you can’t revise for English’ fallacy! 28/04/2017 Year 10 Information Evening

The greater the attendance the greater the attainment.
Possible Impact of poor attendance? Research suggests that 17 missed school days a year = A GCSE grade DROP in achievement. (DfES) The greater the attendance the greater the attainment.
36
Home Learning Independent learning skills
Extending and securing classroom based learning Corporate skills e.g., teamwork Project based learning Place to study - Completion of homework 90 minutes per day Limit screen time! Revision
