4 Applying for Kindergartner Lead Teacher Position at Northeastern Primary School Hello, my name is Sharelius Holmes! Currently, my job qualification afford me to teach K-5 th grade. My current position is the lead teacher at Carver Head Start Center. I am a single parent of one, and engaged to the love of my life. The position in which I am applying for is the lead teacher position. The assistant principal selected me for this positon based on outstanding performance five years in a row. Plus, my NC State rating for teacher of the year for the past two years.

5 My Philosophy of Education My beliefs is that education provides a foundation for children that will enhance their future decisions in life. It is my beliefs that all children if given the chance to learn can and will learn. The purpose of education is to develop successful students to become self-sufficient adults. Students need and desire a nurturing teachers who are supportive of their needs. All children can learn no matter if they are atypical or typical children.

6 Classroom Management Plan Purpose of Classroom Management Plan To prevent behavioral issues that may arrive in the classroom. To create a safe and positive learning environment so that children can learn and grow. To regulate the functioning of the classroom. Ms. Holmes Classroom Management Plan Ms. Holmes Classroom Rules 1. We will keep our hands and feet to ourselves! 2. We will use our walking feet inside the classroom! 3. We will show respect and be polite to everyone! 4. We will use our inside voices inside the classroom! 5. We will listen with our ears! 6. “Name-Calling” and “Belittling” others will not be allowed!

7 Classroom Management for Teacher/Student The Student’s Expectation  Student’s are expected to be on their best behavior with their thinking cap on ready and willing to learn.  Help children gain independence through a conducive learning environment.  Student’s will display leadership in different roles such as: line leader, teacher’s helper, weather reporter, and bus leader. The Teacher Expectation  Motivating force that encourages student’s to learn and trust their inner judgment.  Actively engaging students in learning and the establishing of rules for the classroom.  Creating a positive learning environment full of love and learning.

8 Different School Models Schools today share similar likes and dislikes. Different school models deals with the comparison of two schools in regards to their mission, vision, and teaching styles. The two school compared were Carver Head Start Center and Wallace Elementary School. According to the text, “Public schools are specifically designed to offer a generalized program that is intended for all students. This usually include score subjects, such as math, English, reading, writing, science, history, social studies, and physical education. Other programs, such as performing arts, music, or visual art, are not necessarily a part of the traditional school curriculum, and although some states and districts may offer these, they are generally a focus of other types of schools” (Newman, 2013, CH 6, Para 3).

9 School ASchool B Differences/Similarities identified between schools. Points to consider. Types of School Carver Head Start/Pre-KWallace Elementary School Age group of students Both follow a mandated curriculum Total Population/Demographics Eighteen students enrolled in Pre-K Twenty-two maximum enrolled in the classroom Difference is the number of students enrolled and the maximum number of students enrolled. Similarities are both contain two teachers per classroom. Student-to-teacher Ratio Nine students to one teacher. Two teachers per classroom. One teacher can have twenty-two students. Teacher shares a teacher assistant. The student-to-teacher ratio is different in the Head Start program versus Elementary School. Key Issues Facing Behavioral issues, speech impairment, developmental delays, budget cuts, and funding. Parental Involvement, Budget cuts, Funding, and Behavioral problems. Both schools face similar issues with funding, budget cuts, and behavioral issues. Only Head Start has a greater rate of developmentally delayed students. Role of Technology Computer usage yet limited technological devices. Technology devices helps children to learn and explore. They have Smart Board, Tablets, Desk top computers, Laptops, IPad’s, Video chat monitors, and overhead projectors. The idea is to expose students to technology. Both schools have access to computers. The public school has more access to technology and at a greater number than Head Start. 21 st Century Skills Skills used to challenge children’s brain, allows them to think critically and be creative. Communication between parents, children teacher and staff help enforce the skills. Skills that help children learn and accomplish different levels of knowledge. Computer use, new technology, teachers help implement the skills into the classroom. Both Schools are similar when it comes to the 21 st century skills. Both schools strive to meet the needs of children.

10 Effective Lesson Planning and Design North Carolina Common Core State Standards 1.H.1.3 Explain why national holidays are celebrated (Constitution Day, Independence Day, Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial day, Presidents’ Day, etc). 4.03 Recognize and describe the historical events associated with national holidays. (NC Common Core State Standards for Social Studies)  According to Newman, “Research is the most important component in teaching and learning.” Ex: Colleagues, other teachers, & the Internet  Second most important element is to make sure that you develop clear and precise learning objectives. Ex: Clear, Complete, Specific, & Measurable  Newman suggests: “Clarity, Completeness, and Specificity are needed to drive the rest of the lesson plan.” About the Standards. (n.d.). 14 Assessment Matters Assessment matters when educating young children in the 21 st century. Teachers use assessment in order to evaluate the lessons taught to young children. Through assessments teachers can test the knowledge of their students in order to make necessary improvements. Two types of assessments are used formative and summative. Formative is an ongoing assessment that is used on a daily basis (Newman, Chp. 11, 2013). Summative assessment is a type of assessment given at the end of a lesson (Newman, Chp. 11, 2013). Does assessment matters in education? Yes, assessment measures the knowledge of what has been learned or taught. Newman, R. (2013). Teaching and learning in the 21st century: Connecting the dots. 15 Professional Learning Communities It is important to be a professional in the education field. You must set goals for yourself and the students in order to be successful. Associating yourself with organizations such as ITSE will ensure that you stay on top of the many trends of education. Reflecting on NAEYC and other resources gives valuable feedback for educators. A 21 st century teacher need to maintain their role as a teacher by continual education, this may be through workshops, classes, or even meetings. In order to educate we must educate ourselves.
