Woodrow Wilson’s Presidency New Freedom- name given to Wilson’s progressive reform movement Underwood Tariff- lowered tariffs to 50 year low

Amendments 16 th Amendment- Created the graduated income tax which taxes an individuals income directly -more you make more you pay 17 th Amendment: citizens of each state directly elected their senators

Federal Reserve Act (1913) Sets up a national banking system know as the Federal Reserve in which banks would keep a portion of their deposits in a regional reserve bank *Raise rates to fight inflation *Lower them to stimulate the economy during a recession

Clayton Anti-Trust Act (1914) Extension to Sherman Anti Trust Act Gets rid of: Price discrimination Exclusive dealing- retailers must sell everyone’s goods

Booker T. Washington Booker T. Washington- gave Atlanta Compromise Speech believed the way to equality was through education Founded the Tuskegee Institute to push education

W.E.B. Dubois National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) blacks should use the courts to fight for their rights Believed education was meaningless without equality

Great Migration Great Migration- African Americans began moving to northern cities in search of jobs to escape poverty and discrimination in the South
